Austin Soundwaves Statement on Proposed Arts Education Cuts

For 15 years, Austin Soundwaves has partnered with schools across Central Texas to expand access to high-quality music education. During that time, we have invested millions of dollars in school music programs and student opportunities.

We know firsthand that strong school music programs change lives.

We also know that music programs rarely disappear overnight.

Instead, they erode. A position goes unfilled. A class gets larger. An instrument repair is delayed. A performance opportunity is lost. None of these changes seem catastrophic on their own, but over time they compound and reduce opportunities for students.

Many of the students we serve first discovered their love of music in a public school classroom. Our most successful outcomes happen when students have access to both strong school music programs and opportunities beyond the school day.

We recognize that school districts across Texas are facing significant financial challenges and difficult decisions. We are proud to partner with Austin ISD and many other districts throughout our region, and we remain committed to working alongside educators, administrators, families, and community leaders to support students.

At the same time, we believe arts education is an essential part of a well-rounded education. Music programs help students develop confidence, discipline, leadership, creativity, and a sense of belonging. They strengthen schools, communities, and pathways to future success.

As conversations about proposed cuts continue, we encourage community members to stay informed, share their stories, engage with local leaders, and advocate for opportunities that help young people thrive.

The student success stories we celebrate every day do not happen by accident. They happen because schools, nonprofits, families, donors, and communities choose to invest in young people.

Austin Soundwaves will continue doing our part.

Ways You Can Help:

  • Contact Austin ISD trustees, Superintendent Matias Segura, or your local school principal before the June 18 vote. A Lamar Middle School parent recently created this tool that generates a personalized advocacy email in less than five minutes.

  • Support Austin Soundwaves with a summer donation. Gifts made this summer will help us expand lessons and scholarships for students affected by these cuts.
