Our mission is to make music learning accessible and equitable for all Central Texans.

Inspired by the philosophies of El Sistema, Austin Soundwaves partners with schools and community centers to provide free, high-quality music education to youth throughout Central Texas. Our pedagogy emphasizes a commitment to ensemble-based musical training that is complemented by specialized individual and small group instruction. Mentoring is an important aspect of our teaching, starting with our staff instructors, trickling down to the older, more experienced students who serve as role models and teachers for younger and less-experienced players.

Position Summary:

The Cello Instructor will be expected to teach lessons, sectionals, and may provide lower strings support in classes. The ideal candidate will be an excellent musician and educator, as well as an organized and encouraging mentor to their students. The candidate should be comfortable working with a variety of ages and skill levels, with the ability to adapt to change with a positive attitude. Experience in the Spanish language is helpful.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Teaching private, paired, and/or sectional lessons.

  • Assisting a lead teacher in an orchestra class setting.

  • Providing mentorship and guidance to students.


  • Experience teaching beginning - intermediate strings students.

  • Experience working with children from diverse ethnic, economic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Accomplished instrumental musician.

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, or related fields.

  • Willingness and eagerness to work as part of a team.

  • Ability to work under frequent observation and to receive feedback.
